As a companion piece to yesterdays post, here's The Banana Splits. The Banana Splits Adventure Hour was a show that featured both live action and animated segments on Saturday mornings from 1968 to 1970 – then it went into syndication. The series was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and sponsored by Kellogg's Cereals.
The Banana Splits character costumes; Fleegle (a beagle); Bingo (a gorilla); Drooper (a lion), and Snorky (an elephant), were designed by Sid and Marty Krofft. Their work impressed NBC-TV executives who picked up the Krofft's own H.R. Pufnstuf for the following season. (I plan to post more about Sid and Marty Krofft in the future.)
Every Banana Splits Adventure Hour would have the Splits acting in some wacky skit with a laugh-track, then they'd cut to a cartoon – The Arabian Knights, The Three Musketeers, Micro Ventures, The Hillbilly Bears, The Atom Ant Show. There would also be a musical number with The Banana Splits performing as a bubblegum rock band – today's share.
The Banana Splits Adventure Hour also contained the live action segment Danger Island (my favorite). It featured the shipwrecked Professor Irwin Hayden and his crew as they outran dangerous natives, killer animals, and murderous pirates. The action-packed show featured a young Jan-Michael Vincent, billed as Michael Vincent, and many of the episodes were directed by Richard Donner, who would later direct Superman and Lethal Weapon.[DOWNLOAD] We're The Banana Splits
